Elementary Curriculum
Departmentalization, teacher specialization and high expectations continue as a
basis for all classes. Intense concentration and effort is continued in Reading,
English, and Spelling as these form the basis for all communication. Phonics
instruction is continued along with specific skills concentrating on comprehension
and vocabulary development. Appreciation and understanding of "literature"
through award winning Newberry novels encourage even a reluctant reader to
become involved and motivated with interesting class discussions and "hands-on"
projects. Composition skills are further developed as an extension of the literature
experience. Mathematics is the second area of intense effort. Students are able to
develop strong arithmetic skills in addition to abstract problem solving techniques.
Social Studies and Science allow students opportunities for exploration,
experimentation, and explanation of their world. Fine Arts (art, music, and drama)
are interwoven into the curriculum to encourage individual development and
awareness. Enrichment classes such as Spanish, Mythology and Latin allow
students opportunities for enrichment and exploration. Computer classes instruct
students in basic keyboarding along with multi-media programs and introduction to
computer programming and robotics culminating in regional and state
competitions.
